The Yaoundé City Council commemorated the 138th edition of the International Labour Day on May 01 with a vibrant display of unity and solidarity, echoing the theme for this year: « Constructive Social Dialogue: Vector of Decent Work and Social Progress. » Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, important discussions took place regarding the welfare of the city’s workforce and the challenges they face in the current socio-economic climate.
On April 29, 2024, staff were drilled on the causes, management and prevention of hypertension by health personnel from the MAASSI health centre. They would on April 30, spice up celebrations with a football game against staff of the Centre Regional Council. The match that ended 4-1 in favour of the regional council staff was a chance to show solidarity and conviviality between both institutions.
Labour Day celebrations proper kicked off with a spirited march past along the iconic May 20 Boulevard, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the City Council’s workers. Following the march past, a reception was held at the City Council premises, providing an opportunity for reflection and dialogue.
During the reception, Estelle Mendomo, the Staff Delegate, took the stage to express gratitude to the City Mayor, highlighting the attention given to the concerns of the staff. However, she also stressed the need for further action, particularly in light of the escalating cost of living. Mendomo appealed for additional measures to alleviate the financial burdens faced by the workforce.
In response, City Mayor Luc Messi Atangana acknowledged the dedication and hard work of the city’s staff, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the community. He urged them to continue their efforts towards the advancement of Yaoundé.
Turning his attention to the pressing issue of the rising cost of living, he offered immediate reassurance to the staff, pledging to address the disparity caused by the increasing cost of living by revising the financial benefits provided to the workforce. He assured the staff that their concerns were heard and affirmed his commitment to ensuring their well-being.
The mayor’s prompt response was met with appreciation from the assembled staff, who welcomed the reassurance and tangible steps towards addressing their concerns. The celebration ended with a dancing and live music.
