Councilors of the Yaoundé City Council have been given a guided tour of some major project sites in the town by Mayor Luc Messi Atangana. The April 16, 2025 tour kicked off at the Etoudi Commercial Centre (Yaounde I) nearing completion. Initiated in June 2023, the 18-month project started with ridding the site of ambulant traders and illegal occupants, followed by the construction of the commercial center with about 700 shops, parking spaces, a supermarket and a space for open air traders. With close to 10 more months to go, works are now at well over 65%, and on course to be delivered in record time.
In the Yaounde IV subdivision, the councilors were given a tour of the Carrefour Belibi-Terminus Mimboman and Carrefour Emombo 2eme-Essomba roads where they also took stock of the level of works and the challenges encountered.
The Carrefour Cornier-DOVV Essos stretch consisted the third lapse of the guided tour with Senior Councilors shows the road works carried out. This included the tarring of the stretch, the use of pavement bricks in parts of the stretch found in marshy areas, and the construction of pavements to facilitate movement of pedestrians.
It was with beaming smiles that the Councilors arrived at the Quartier Fouda (Base HYSACAM) neighbourhood in the Yaounde V subdivision. With works for the reconstruction of a 15-metre long culvert almost completed, floods in the locality are already a thing of the past. After persistent repairs, the City Council proceeded to reconstruct the culvert, widening it to permit excess water flow. At a visit to the site weeks back, Mayor Luc Messi Atangana had explained that it was essential to use a culvert in place of a regular gutter, as part of measures to avoid floods caused by anarchical construction downstream and thee improper disposal of waste by locals.
The Councilors ended their tour with a stop at the Vallee Ekounou (CFTA) Bridge found in the Yaounde IV subdivision, another of many projects authored by the City Council. Costing the sum of 445 million FCFA, the bridge was reconstructed from scratch in barely two months to permit the smooth flow of traffic. It consisted among others, displacing the delicate water networks involved as well as raising the sides to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
The tour that was followed by sessions in their respective commissions, is in prelude to the first Council Session for the year, dedicated to the adoption of 2023 financial accounts.
